A fantastic list, a fantastic website. As a somewhat frequent visitor to India I agree with everything here. I'm especially fond of the suggestion that all travelers bring a water purifier. I never buy bottled water in India, always use my water purifier, and have never fallen ill. I use a Steri-pen in a nalgene bottle.
I'd only add (and I may have missed it) toilet tissue. I'm certainly accustomed to it and enjoy having it with me when there's none around, which is mostly.
Well done, all!

ps: can't wait to see the book

This is a great list!
For a baby we are adding (so far):
an extra large backpack!
baby travel cot with built in mosquito netting
re-usable cloth nappies/diapers with extra inserts (pocket nappies for easy drying)
our stock of infant meds and herbal remedies
a few small toys and books
lightweight baby sleeping bag
baby shampoo, body wash, towel toothbrush and toothpaste
all of his summer wardrobe (to give away before we leave)
Ergo baby carrier
baby sunblock
umbrella (my boy will not wear a hat!)
a travel hammock
car seat (yes, after much thought we decided to book a taxi for the four hour drive from Chennai to Tiruvannamalai)

I hope it all fits!!!

I feel that my carefree backpacking days are over, but at lease we are still able to travel to India, even if we are being a bit more careful this time.
